Are you waking up more tired than when you went to bed?

Do you wake up during the night and have trouble going back to sleep?

When was the last night when you slept like a baby, all through the night?

When I wake up too early and cannot go back to sleep, I lie there and compose my grocery list, plan my tasks, and even have great ideas for blog posts.  But then the alarm goes off and I’m suddenly feeling like I need a couple more hours of sleep.

In a prior post I explained what your circadian rhythm is and why it is important to honor the natural rhythm our body was designed to follow. If you aren’t getting  7-9 hours of sleep today’s post on sleep hygiene will be helpful.

sleep hygiene  (noun)

habits and practices that are conducive to sleeping well on a regular basis: sleep hygiene is the key to sweet dreams.

  • Sleeping in a quiet, cool and dark room promotes more restful sleep.

  • Drink a cup of herbal tea an hour or so before bedtime.

  • Soak in a hot bath.  Better with bath salts and lavender essential oil.

  • Turn off all electronics 1-2 hours before bedtime.

These are all practices of “sleep hygiene”.  Incorporating one or more of these practices will improve the quality and quantity of the sleep you get.

People under stress often have difficulty getting to sleep, or staying asleep.  Establishing a routine that honors your circadian rhythm is a first step to better sleep.

Here is a handout,  15 Ideas for Better Sleep , with more tips to improve your quality and quantity of sleep.

I referred to your circadian rhythm.  If you missed that post you can read it here .
