Through my own health journey I have learned a thing or two about what it means to “eat healthy”.
There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to what you should eat.
There are more diets than Carter had pills.
Eating well may not be the same as eating right.
My favorite how-to-eat statement comes from Michael Pollan. He opens In Defense of Food with the following:
“Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much”
Here are five reasons to eat real food.
- God designed our body to be fueled by food.
Genesis 1:29 “Look, I have given you every seed bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you.”
2. Real food is nutrient dense.
Processed foods have calories but most are low or void of nutrients.
3. Real food provides more than calories.
Food provides macronutrients ~ these include protein, fat, carbohydrates. Food also provides micronutrients ~ minerals, vitamins, phytonutrients.
4. Real food provides information to your cells.
There are switches on your DNA. These switches are turned off or on depending on the information they receive from the food you eat. Environment can also activate these switches.
5. Food is Medicine
“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food” Hippocrates

Working as a pharmacist I had always approached disease by taking a medication to get rid of the symptom that something was not right. For pain I took pain pills. For an infection I was prescribed antibiotics. For hormone imbalance I took synthetic hormones.
But I never felt completely well. If I stopped the treatment the symptoms returned.
When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism I was motivated to began researching how what I ate affected my health. This was when my body began to heal. It wasn’t a get-well-quick process. But I began to feel better little by little. Food became my medicine.
My eyes were opened to how, in my particular case, it was the food I was eating that was causing my pain.
Five years later I have retired from working as a pharmacist to be a farmacist.
Instead of dispensing pills I help individuals discover how changing what they eat can improve their health.

I transitioned to a whole food diet several years ago. It was the first big change I made which started me on my journey to healing my body. Through the process I learned that the chronic pain I had experienced for over 25 years was due to a food intolerance. I have never turned back.
My tip for making it easier is to consider what it costs to not change. Once I realized that it is the food I was eating that is making me sick I was motivated!
Our chiropractor says that every decision we make moves us up a continuum toward life and health or down that continuum to loss of health and death. Eating real food moves us up the continuum toward health!
Eating clean means eating real, honest food that is organic, not processed. Check out these 5 reasons to eat more clean food.
It’s not a secret that fast food is bad for you. I don’t think I just blew your mind by writing that. I do, however, think that people believe that there s nothing wrong with eating fast food in moderation. It really comes down to ignorance being blissful.
