While I was still working in pharmacy I learned of a program in my community, Local Farmacy Rx. I wasn’t able to participate in 2014. I left the pharmacy last fall, so this year I was able to participate as the nutrition educator.
The program is funded through grants. We began in July with an orientation and data collection. To show the program makes a difference in the health of the participants we track weight and blood pressure, at the start and completion of the program. We presented in English one week, Spanish the following week.
We offered the family curriculum by Cooking Matters. Each week the families prepared a meal together. We taught basic cooking skills, value of eating whole foods, how to read labels and recipes, value of being active as a family, and we enjoyed the meal together each week. Each family received either a CSA box or stipend to spend at our local farmers market every week.
We were interviewed by KVNF. Here is their article and radio interview.
Local Farmacy Rx made it possible for me to possitively affect the lives of 14 families. As a health & wellness coach I work with individuals to restore their health by focusing on eating a whole food diet.
