Before we discuss why your circadian rhythm is important, especially when it comes to your health, here is the definition:
circadian |sərˈkādēən|
adjectivePhysiology
(of biological processes) recurring naturally on a twenty-four-hour cycle, even in the absence of light fluctuations: a circadian rhythm.
ORIGIN 1950s: formed irregularly from Latin circa ‘around’ + dies ‘day.’
The hormones cortisol and melatonin are produced in a circadian rhythm. These two hormones are produced in patterns opposite of each other.Cortisol is produced in a pattern known as “circadian rhythm”. Your level should be highest in the morning, lowest as you go to sleep. Long ago, before technology, this occurred naturally. We woke up when the sun came up, we slept when it was dark.
Melatonin on the other hand is produced beginning shortly after sunset, and production is least at sunrise.
Several facets of modern society interfere with this natural pattern now.
- We have electricity, so we extend our days with lights and electronics (more on this in a bit)
- Living removed from the land, compared to our grandparents, our daily routine is not tied to a regular rhythm correlated to the sun rising and setting.
- As a modern society many people work jobs that involve long hours or even more difficult, shift work.
Why is this important? Because we sleep best when cortisol is low and melatonin is rising. When you follow a wake-sleep pattern in sync with the natural production of the hormones cortisol and melatonin your sleep is more restorative.
In my program, Undress Your Stress, you learn how to honor your circadian rhythm. Honoring your circadian rhythm is a critial step to living life with balanced hormones. When your hormones are in balance everyone is happier.
