An Ancient Diet for Modern Living
Thousands of years ago, in 597 BC, the Jewish nation was conquered by the powerful Babylonian empire. In the first chapter of Daniel in the Old Testament, we read the story of Daniel and his three friends, who found themselves in a terrible and stressful season of life. They were taken captive by the Babylonian king, dragged off to a new country, and placed in a strange and unfamiliar court to serve a wicked king.
When they realized they would be required to eat food against their religious convictions, they made an odd request to the king:
“Please test your servants for 10 days. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then examine our appearance and the appearance of the young men who are eating the king’s food, and deal with your servants based on what you see.” (Daniel 1:12-15)
The king agreed with them and allowed them to follow this strict vegetable and water diet for 10 days. At the end of 10 days, they looked better and healthier than all their peers who were eating the king’s rich food, earning honors and the king’s favor.
I can’t help but think how strong and energetic these young men must have felt after those 10 days of eating wholesome foods. What if there were some modern application for us today?
